Lord of the rings

The beautiful lands of Middle-earth with their sprawling forests, craggy mountains and quaint villages have captured the imagination of millions since JRR Tolkien envisaged them in the 50’s. No one ever expected such an incredible place to really exist. Fifty years later Peter Jackson made them a vivid reality when he shot movies of the trilogy, famously using his home country of New Zealand as the backdrop. In the land of the long white cloud, the world of Middle-Earth came to life, and fans have been flocking to gaze in wonder at the incredible scenery ever since. In our Lord of the Rings tour you can experience all the real locations for yourself, while staying in Hobbit style accommodation, and immersing yourself in the world that had once seemed so unreal.

Day One

Arrive in Christchurch, New Zealand and check into The Classic Villa B&B.

Day Two

Join the popular Journey to Edoras tour. This day trip will take you to the remote and beautiful Mt Potts, high country station, which was transformed by Jackson into Edoras, the capital city of Rohan. The tour includes a 4X4 drive through the region, a champagne picnic lunch, entertaining and witty Kiwi guides, and scenery you will never forget.

Day Three

Drive down the Inland Scenic Route past the pristine sheep and dairy farming country of Canterbury before beginning a slow ascent into the interior of the island. It’s from here that the incredible Southern Alps of New Zealand begin to rise from the earth. The steepest mountain range in the world they were perfect for the mountain crossing scenes in The Fellowship of the Ring. An hour further south on your journey lies the setting for Gondor, the white mountain and the Entwash. Here too the largest battle scene in the trilogy was filmed. It all lies on private lands and only this tour can get you to stand on the actual site of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Take a tour through the area to see just how it was all done, before heading further south to the pristine mountain lake resort of Wanaka. Here you will find Hobbit style accommodation at the 5 Star Minaret Lodge. There you will get to experience lodgings much as the Hobbits do in Bree, with massively oversize beds, and furniture. You will even get a chance to taste Lembas bread for real while indulging in second breakfast.

Day Four

Travel the winding and often turbulent Matukituki river between sheer cliffs and overlooked by the Avalanche Glacier and Mighty mount Titiea. As you go your guide will take you through Geographical and Historical tales of the area. If you have never been jet boating before this will all be an experience as your guide whips at top speeds over just centimetres of water, before carving circles in calm pools. You will still be experiencing the adrenalin as you walk through the calm forested glades alongside a river and up to a waterfall where you will enjoy lunch. The afternoon is yours to do with as you wish.

Day 5

You will head south today  and after crossing New Zealand’s highest mountain pass will descend into Queenstown. A further two hours later you will arrive in the picturesque lakeside town of Te Anau. Check into the Von House B&B where the owner worked on the Lord of the Rings films and conducts tours to some of the out of the way, and seldom visited film locations.

Day Six

The Doubtful and Milford sound are both very near your B&B so take the opportunity to visit one of these epicly beautiful natural areas. Rivendell, The Dead Marshes and The Anduin river scenes were all shot in this area.

Day Seven

Your B&B hosts will accompany you to Fangorn Forest and Nen Hithoel, the Mavora Lakes before heading back into Queenstown for a stay in the Queenstown House Boutique Hotel, known for its food and wines.

Day Eight

Today you will be taken on a complete Middle-Earth experience. Get to see yet more locations and be taken to see the actual props and costumes from the film. Lunch is taken in a restaurant overlooking the Remarkables mountain range, which is featured heavily in all three movies of the trilogy. Your guides know all the inside stories to the movies and will share tales and gossip from on set as you get a thorough look into the “behind the scenes” moments that make up these great films. The groups are kept small and personalised, which really helps you to experience exactly why they call this area Godzone (God’s own).

Day Nine

In the morning you will take the Glenorchy tour (a half day 4×4 tour up into the spectacular, rugged and green Mt Aspiring National Park. Amidst these towering peaks lie numerous locations from the Lord of the Rings, as well as the location where Narnia in Spring was shot. After this exhilarating tour you are free to venture the island of New Zealand as you wish, or alternatively catch your flight in Queensland to head home.
