Mountains, Temples & Hill Stations

India boasts enormous cultural and geographical diversity, particularly in the north where the plains meet the Himalaya. Here India's history is perhaps at its most complex, manifested in the profusion of religions and landscapes. We visit Amritsar's Golden Temple, the most revered of all Sikh temples, as well as Pragpur, a heritage village, and McLeod Ganj, home to Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. We end with Shimla, the former 'summer capital' of the British Raj and a sunrise visit of the exquisite Taj Mahal.

Breakfast and two lunches are included throughout the trip and you should allow at least £12 (US$16) per day for lunch and dinner. You can eat out very cheaply in India, but if you go to the more expensive restaurants you will spend more than the suggested amount. In a lot of towns there is a choice of restaurants and a choice between Indian and Western style food however please note that this is not always the case. If you are a vegetarian, India is probably one of the best destinations to travel to. Tea and soft drinks are very cheap. A (large!) bottle of beer is approximately £3 (US$5). Mineral water is widely available.
